Senior officials at Arsenal have reportedly identified Como head coach and former club captain, Cesc Fabregas, as the ideal candidate to replace Mikel Arteta, amid growing uncertainty over the Spaniard’s future at the Emirates.

According to reports by Mundo Deportivo, Arteta could be in his final days as Arsenal manager if the club’s season ends without major silverware.

The development comes as pressure continues to build on the Arsenal boss following a disappointing run of results, despite the Gunners beginning 2026 in strong form and chasing four trophies at one stage.

Arsenal had looked well placed for a memorable campaign after entering the new year with momentum in multiple competitions.

However, their quest for an unprecedented quadruple has since suffered major setbacks.

Arteta’s side were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, before suffering another blow in the FA Cup quarter-final, where they lost to Southampton.

Those defeats have narrowed Arsenal’s hopes of silverware and increased scrutiny on Arteta, who is now in his sixth full season in charge of the North London club.

Bournemouth Defeat Deepens Title Fears

The Genius Media Nigeria reports that the pressure intensified further on Saturday when Arsenal missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to 12 points.

Instead, the Gunners slumped to a 2-1 home defeat against Bournemouth, a result that has left supporters increasingly worried about another collapse in the title race.

Although Arsenal remain nine points clear at the summit, Manchester City are said to have two games in hand, a situation that has only added to tension around the club.

The defeat also triggered a visible reaction from supporters, with many reportedly walking out of the stadium before the final whistle.

That response reflected the growing anxiety among the fanbase, with fears mounting that Arsenal could bottle the league title once again after putting themselves in a strong position.

Reports indicated that Arsenal’s recent poor form is now being discussed at the boardroom level, with senior figures at the club believed to be considering the possibility of a managerial change if Arteta fails to deliver either the Premier League or Champions League this season.

According to the UK Metro, Arsenal are prepared to sack Arteta if the team ends the campaign without winning one of those two major trophies.

That possibility would represent a major decision by the club’s hierarchy, especially considering Arteta’s role in rebuilding the team and returning Arsenal to serious title contention.

Still, questions continue to trail the manager’s record in terms of silverware.

Since taking charge of Arsenal, Arteta has won only one major trophy, the FA Cup, despite spending six full seasons at the helm.

Fabregas Emerges As Leading Candidate

Should Arsenal decide to part ways with Arteta, Fabregas is reportedly the leading option to take over.

The former Arsenal captain has attracted attention for his work at Como, where he is currently guiding the Italian club’s push for European qualification.

His growing reputation in management, combined with his history at Arsenal, appears to have placed him high on the club’s shortlist.

Fabregas remains a respected figure among many Arsenal supporters because of his impact during his playing days, and his progress in Italy has only strengthened suggestions that he could one day return to the club in a new role.

For Arsenal, the coming weeks could prove decisive.

The club remains in contention in the league and Europe, but the pressure is now firmly on Arteta to produce results that can restore confidence among supporters and within the boardroom.

If Arsenal recover and end the season with a major trophy, talk of a managerial change may quickly disappear.

But if the club’s recent struggles continue, speculation over Arteta’s future and Fabregas’ possible return to the Emirates is likely to grow even stronger, TGM reports.
