The Kannywood community is mourning the death of veteran actor Umar Ascon, whose portrayal of Alhaji Lado Mai Barkono in the popular series Garwashi earned him widespread recognition among Hausa film audiences.
The actor passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano after battling a prolonged unnamed illness.
News of his passing was confirmed by Kannywood producer and neighbour Abubakar Yahaya Matinko, who shared details about the late actor’s final moments.
Before he became a beloved face on TV, Ascon built a career as a businessman operating at the Hotoro Depot in Kano.
His transition into the film industry later brought him fame in Kannywood, where his memorable performances connected with viewers across northern Nigeria.
In addition to his standout role in Garwashi, the actor also featured in other Hausa film productions, including Wata Shida and Manyan Mata, further cementing his place within the regional movie industry.
Meanwhile, family members confirmed that the late actor leaves behind a pregnant wife and two daughters.
Following Islamic traditions, funeral prayers for the actor were held at the Al‑Masjlisul Islami Mosque located near Gade-Gade Filling Station in Kano, where he was laid to rest.
