Past Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday ended speculation about his involvement with the Coalition for Nigeria by formally registering as a member.

The 80-year-old did his registration at the Ogun State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Oke Ilewo area of Abeokuta, a day after the new movement was launched in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Present at Thursday’s ceremony were former Governors Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Donald Duke of Osun and Cross River states respectively.

Both men were also at the Abuja launch from which Obasanjo was conspicuously missing.

Obasanjo, who was military head of state in the 70s, also presided as civilian president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He tore his PDP membership card in February 2015 after falling out with the party.

In a recent letter addressed to current President Muhammadu Buhari, Obasanjo described the PDP and the now ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as “two evils”.

He called on Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019 while calling for a “third force” or coalition of Nigerians.
