BREAKING: Influential US Senator Lindsey Graham Is Dead [PHOTO]

The United States has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the most influential figures in modern American politics and a leading voice on foreign policy, who died at the age of 71 after a brief illness.

Graham’s office confirmed the development in a statement released early Sunday, announcing that the South Carolina lawmaker passed away on the evening of Saturday, July 11, while requesting privacy for his grieving family.

“On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness. Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period,” the statement read.

Although no official cause of death was disclosed, reports indicated that emergency responders were dispatched to Graham’s Capitol Hill residence at about 8:30 p.m. after receiving a distress call involving chest pains.

According to eyewitness accounts and emergency scanner reports, paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after he reportedly suffered cardiac arrest before rushing him to George Washington University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His death came barely two days after celebrating his 71st birthday on July 9 and just hours after returning from an official visit to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to conclude discussions on a bipartisan sanctions proposal targeting Russia.

Born in Central, South Carolina, in 1955, Graham overcame personal tragedy at a young age after losing both parents. He assumed responsibility for raising his younger sister while pursuing higher education at the University of South Carolina and later its School of Law.

Before entering politics, Graham served as a military lawyer in the United States Air Force, working as both prosecutor and defence attorney. He later joined the Air Force Reserve and retired with the rank of Colonel.

His political career gained national prominence in 1994, when he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives during the Republican Party’s historic electoral surge known as the “Republican Revolution.”

He became a household name four years later after serving as one of the House managers during the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in 1998.

In 2002, Graham was elected to the U.S. Senate, succeeding longtime Senator Strom Thurmond, and went on to become one of the chamber’s most influential lawmakers.

Throughout more than two decades in the Senate, Graham built a reputation as a forceful advocate of a robust American foreign policy and national security agenda. Alongside the late Senator John McCain, he formed one of Washington’s most influential bipartisan voices on defence and international affairs, while also participating in negotiations on immigration reform and judicial appointments.

His death marks the end of a political career that spanned more than three decades and left a lasting imprint on American legislation, national security and foreign policy.
