FIFA has confirmed the match officials for France’s FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Morocco, with the appointment immediately attracting attention after the governing body selected an entire on-field officiating team from Argentina. The quarter-final in Boston will become the first match at the tournament to feature all five on-field officials from the same country, a decision that has prompted widespread discussion among supporters despite FIFA following an appointment pattern that has been used throughout the competition.

The heavyweight quarter-final, a rematch of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, is scheduled for July 10 at Boston Stadium with kick-off at 1:30 a.m. IST, where the winners will move one step closer to the World Cup final.

FIFA confirms complete Argentinian officiating crew

FIFA announced on Tuesday that Argentine referee Facundo Tello will take charge of the quarter-final between France and Morocco.

He will be assisted by fellow Argentinians Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, while Darío Herrera has been appointed fourth official and Christian Navarro will serve as the reserve assistant referee.

The complete on-field officiating team is:

  • Referee: Facundo Tello (Argentina)
  • Assistant Referee 1: Juan Pablo Belatti (Argentina)
  • Assistant Referee 2: Gabriel Chade (Argentina)
  • Fourth Official: Darío Herrera (Argentina)
  • Reserve Assistant Referee: Christian Navarro (Argentina)

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) appointments had not yet been confirmed when FIFA released the match officials.

The appointment means every on-field official for the fixture will come from Argentina, making it the first such instance during the 2026 World Cup.

Fans question FIFA’s decision

The appointments immediately triggered thousands of reactions online, with many supporters expressing concern over the perceived conflict of interest.

Reacting to the announcement, @ArtButSports posted:

“The Bribe.” Another fan, @XnzyDrewS, questioned FIFA’s neutrality. “All Argentina referees for a France match. FIFA trying everything to rig the World Cup for Argentina once again.

@elin_ghadimian also criticised the appointment with sarcasm.

“FIFA doesn’t hide it anymore. All Argentinian. Why don’t you bring Messi to check the VAR too?”

For @AminJaman, the issue was difficult to understand.

“Why on earth would FIFA appoint a complete crew from a country that is actively still in the tournament and on the exact same side of the bracket? Everything just keeps going Argentina’s way.”

Nigerian supporter @the_smallie compared the situation to election controversies.

“Between FIFA and INEC, I don’t know who has more controversy.”
