The Federal Government has unveiled plans to allow journalists to accompany military personnel during selected operations as part of efforts to enhance transparency, improve security reporting, and strengthen public understanding of ongoing counterinsurgency and security efforts across the country.

The initiative, which will see media professionals embedded with troops during military operations, is aimed at providing firsthand accounts of developments in conflict zones and ensuring more accurate reporting of security activities.

According to government officials, the move is expected to bridge the information gap between security agencies and the public by giving journalists direct access to operational environments, subject to necessary security protocols and guidelines.

Authorities believe the arrangement will help combat misinformation, showcase the sacrifices of military personnel, and provide citizens with credible updates on efforts to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security challenges.

Security experts have described the proposal as a significant step toward greater accountability and transparency, noting that embedded journalism has been used in several countries to offer real-time insights into military operations while maintaining operational security.

However, the initiative is also expected to raise discussions about the safety of journalists in conflict areas and the need to balance press freedom with national security considerations.

If fully implemented, the programme could mark a new era in Nigeria’s security reporting landscape, bringing journalists closer than ever to the realities faced by troops on the frontlines.

Further details on the framework, selection process, and operational guidelines for participating journalists are expected to be released by the government in the coming weeks.
