BREAKING: Nigerian Senate Proposes Six-Year Single Term For Presidency And Governors After 2027

The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has said a new bill will be presented that proposes a single six-year tenure for presidents and state governors after the 2027 general elections.

The Genius Media Nigeria reports that he said the plan is aimed at changing the current system where elected leaders can serve two terms.

Bamidele explained that the proposal would be one of the first bills he intends to bring forward when the next Senate begins.

He said the idea is to allow leaders focus fully on governing instead of spending time preparing for re-election.

According to him, the present two-term arrangement often pushes office holders to start political planning early in their first term, which reduces the time they spend on governance.

He said that under the proposed system, a leader would serve only one term of six years.

This, he noted, would remove the pressure of seeking a second term and allow full attention on delivering results from the start of their tenure.

Bamidele added that once a leader knows there is no second term, they would be more committed to using their time in office effectively.

He also said he understands that not everyone may agree with the proposal, but lawmakers still have the duty to put forward ideas they believe can improve governance.

He noted that laws should be open to change as society develops and needs shift.

If the bill is introduced and approved by the National Assembly, it will require changes to the constitution before it can become law.
