NDDC Boss Urges Students to be Committed to Civic Duties

The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, has called on students in higher institutions in the region to obtain the Permanent Voters Card, PVC, issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission, as it is the means to influence decisions and elect leaders whose values align with the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerian youths.

Ogbuku, who was represented by the Director of Social Services, Engr. Jeremiah Oritsejolone, at the launch of the Project New Nigeria and the sensitisation of voter registration organised by the Foundation for Citizens Empowerment in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, described the voting process as a testament to the citizens’ belief in a country with the potential to grow, improve, and flourish.

He declared: “The Nigerian youths are the heartbeat of the new Nigeria that we all seek. Your energy, brilliance and voice would determine the direction our nation takes. For your voice to be heard, you must collect your PVC as the process gives you the opportunity to influence decisions, shape governance and demand accountability.”

Ogbuku, who noted that since assuming office, the commission has not relented in carrying out transformation and capacity-building programmes across the region, enjoined students to register and collect their PVCs in preparation for the forthcoming general elections.

The NDDC boss reiterated that the Commission would support initiatives that promote civic participation and empower future generations.

Earlier, the Convener of Project New Nigeria, Mr Samuel Okani, said the initiative was introduced to complement government efforts to build a solid democracy through proper orientation on the voting process.

“We are carrying out this exercise in all the universities in the region to give orientation and broaden students’ horizon on the need for them to collect their PVCs and actively participate in the voting exercise, as we believe that this is another way for the youths to control the economy,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the programme would be sustained in the coming years.
