BREAKING: Rivers Assembly Begins Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara [DETAILS]

The political landscape in Rivers State took another turn on Thursday when members of the state’s House of Assembly began impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh.

During plenary presided over by the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Rivers State House of Assembly, Major Jack, read out the notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Fubara.

Twenty-six members of the Rivers State House of Assembly signed the notice which they alleged was against the Nigerian Constitution.

The Deputy Majority Leader of the RSHA, Linda Stewart, also read out the notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Oduh.

The lawmakers, who were already in plenary, initiated the process by tabling a notice of impeachment against the governor, accusing him of gross misconduct in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The development marks a decisive move by the legislature and signals a further breakdown in relations between the executive and the Assembly.

Sources within the House disclosed that the impeachment notice was backed by a significant number of members, meeting the constitutional threshold required to trigger the process. The allegations reportedly include claims of financial mismanagement, refusal to comply with legislative resolutions, and actions considered incompatible with constitutional governance. Detailed particulars of the accusations are expected to emerge as proceedings advance.

The impeachment move is the latest chapter in a long-running power struggle between Governor Fubura and a faction of the Assembly widely perceived to be loyal to former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The political rift, which surfaced shortly after Fubura assumed office, has since deepened, leading to legislative deadlock, court battles and repeated political standoffs.

Rivers State has remained a focal point of national political attention following the crisis that escalated in 2025, when tensions between the executive and legislature prompted federal intervention and sparked widespread debate over constitutional order and democratic norms. Although that intervention temporarily eased hostilities, the underlying conflict was never fully resolved.

Political analysts warn that the renewed impeachment push could further destabilise the state if not handled strictly in accordance with constitutional provisions. Under the law, the process requires the formal service of impeachment allegations on the governor, adoption of the motion by a two-thirds majority of the House, and the possible constitution of an investigative panel before any final decision on removal can be taken.

As of the time of filing this report, Governor Fubura had yet to make any official public response to the impeachment proceedings. Efforts to obtain a reaction from Government House were unsuccessful.

With the Assembly now fully engaged in the process, attention has shifted to how the unfolding impeachment drama will shape governance, political alignments and stability in Rivers State in the days ahead.
