BREAKING: AfroSport Secures Free-To-Air Rights For AFCON 2025

Football fans across Nigeria are set for a unifying season as AfroSport confirmed Free-to-Air rights for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

In a statement on Thursday, Deji Omotoyinbo, Content Director, AfroSport, said the agreement with CAF and rights owner NWTV followed months of technical engagement and strategic planning.

He said the arrangement ensures every Nigerian household can enjoy live coverage without subscription fees.

He said the decision strengthens FTA television as Nigeria’s most reliable and accessible broadcast platform.

Omotoyinbo said millions of viewers will benefit from uninterrupted coverage throughout the festive football period.

Omotoyinbo said all matches will air nationwide on its extensive FTA network, including NTA and BON.

The broadcaster said partnering with affiliate stations ensures wide coverage, even in rural communities.

According to him, technical teams are preparing enhanced production features to improve viewer experience across all platforms.

He said pre-match analysis, expert commentary and fan-centred programming will accompany live broadcasts.

Omotoyinbo explained that the network aims to promote national unity by providing shared experiences through football.

Founded as a hub for African sports media, AfroSport manages, produces and distributes sports content across the continent.

It also organises the Unity Cup, a competition designed to promote grassroots development and regional cohesion.

Omotoyinbo said securing AFCON rights aligns with AfroSport mission to democratise access to major sports events for all Nigerians.

Analysts say Nigeria’s group presents opportunities for early momentum if the team maintains strong form.

Chief Consultant, Akintunde-Johnson Bada, said the partnership reflects CAF’s confidence in AfroSport’s ability to deliver quality nationwide coverage.

“We are proud to receive CAF’s trust and deliver this important event to every Nigerian home,” Bada said.

He said AFCON 2025 arrives at a crucial moment as national expectations rise following recent football performances.

“AFCON 2025 comes at a crucial time, and we hope our boys go one better than in Ivory Coast,” he added.

Bada said AfroSport remains committed to expanding access to major sports events for all Nigerians.

“FTA television remains the people’s platform, and AfroSport will ensure every Nigerian joins this journey,” he said.

NWTV Managing Director, Nimonka Kolani, said the agreement keeps fans connected to the Super Eagles throughout the tournament.

“By securing these rights, AfroSport ensures all Nigerians can follow their heroes in Morocco,” Kolani said.

He said CAF’s leadership under Dr Patrice Motsepe continues to support partnerships that deepen football engagement in Africa.

Kolani said the collaboration demonstrates the value of expanding access to continental football beyond paid platforms.

The tournament runs from Dec.  21 to  Jan. 18, 2026, marking a rare festive-season championship.

The opening match will see hosts Morocco face Comoros in what organisers expect to attract massive viewership.

Nigeria will start its Group C campaign on Dec. 22 against Tanzania in a potentially decisive early encounter.

The Super Eagles will face Tunisia on Dec. 27 before meeting Uganda on Dec. 30.
