In a bold political move, former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential hopeful Peter Obi has declared his intention to run for Nigeria’s highest office once again in the 2027 general elections.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi firmly dismissed growing rumours that he may play second fiddle in the next election cycle as a running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” Obi said, putting to rest weeks of speculation.

When pressed on the possibility of teaming up with Atiku for a joint ticket, Obi was unequivocal.

“This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that,” he stated. “People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C.”

Obi reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party, under which he contested in 2023 and secured a significant youth following, though ultimately losing to incumbent President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite remaining a key figure in the Labour Party, Obi also acknowledged his active role in a broader opposition alliance led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), aimed at unseating the APC in 2027.

“I am part of the coalition which will be able to produce a president with the capacity and compassion to save this country,” Obi declared.

As Nigeria begins to gear up for what promises to be a high-stakes electoral battle, all eyes are on the emerging dynamics between opposition parties and the potential re-election bid of President Tinubu.
