Nigeria Needs To Act Fast To Tackle Recurring Traffic Crashes – Suberu—-Dr Yusuf Suberu, National Coordinator, Road Traffic and Vehicle Inspection Mayors, says Nigeria needs to act fast to address the recurring road traffic crashes in the country.

Suberu made the appeal on Wednesday in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the forthcoming Roundtable with strategic stakeholders in the transport sector, slated to hold on Dec. 19.

According to him, the road traffic crashes and resultant deaths are preventable if the right things are taken by the government and other stakeholders.

He said that the injuries and deaths being recorded were devastating not only on individuals and families, but also the governments and the economy.

“We need to act fast,” he added, saying that the mayors were committed to working towards curtailing the crashes.

“The mandate of the service is to ensure that RTCs deaths and injuries were reduced to the barest minimum across the country and we will not stop until that is achieved.

“There is an urgent need to proffer and implement more proactive measures towards ensuring effective and sustained reduction of RTCs, injuries and deaths on Nigeria Roads.”

Suberu said to achieve this, Nigeria must accomplish the five pillars of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety.

According to him, the roundtable is part of measures to push for the full implementation of the UN Action for Road Safety.

He added that the roundtable would assess the county’s transportation and road safety situation, as well as challenges.

“And itemise issues that need to be effectively addressed by all the stakeholders in the coming year to significantly reduce the carnage on Nigeria roads.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the forthcoming roundtable is, “Challenges of Pre-crash and Post -Crash issues in Nigeria; the way forward”.
