BREAKING: Julian Nagelsmann Officially Appointed As Germany New Head Coach—Julian Nagelsmann will be Germany’s head coach for the upcoming home Euro 2024 tournament.
The hiring comes after Hansi Flick was sacked following a 4-1 loss to Japan. Nagelsmann last managed Bayern Munich, where he won the Bundesliga in his first full season, but was sacked in March of this year after a string of poor results following the World Cup in Qatar.
Julian Nagelsmann has been appointed Germany’s new head coach for Euro 2024 on home soil.
The 36-year-old replaces Hansi Flick, who became the first manager ever to be sacked from the German national team post after a 4-1 loss in a friendly against Japan.
Nagelsmann joins Germany on a contract until the end of next summer’s European Championships.
“We have a European Championship in our own country. That’s something special – something that happens every few decades,” said Nagelsmann.
“I subordinate everything to the fact of having a great tournament in a great country. I have a great desire to take on this challenge. We will be a close-knit group next year.”
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said: “Next year’s European Championship is of enormous importance for football in Germany as a whole.
“We are convinced that Julian Nagelsmann, as national coach, will ensure that the national team inspires its fans and that the Euros is also a sporting success.
“Julian Nagelsmann is an outstanding coach who approaches his new task with the highest level of motivation. We will all now focus on the tournament next summer and support Julian Nagelsmann as best we can.”
Nagelsmann also succeeded Flick in his last managerial job at Bayern Munich after being appointed in 2021 from RB Leipzig, reportedly becoming the most expensive manager in the world at a cost of £21.7m.
With Bayern, Nagelsmann won the Bundesliga in his first full season at the club.
However, he was dismissed in March 2023 when Bayern were one point behind Dortmund in the league. He was subsequently replaced by Thomas Tuchel and Bayern went on to win the title.
