Ranking The Best Leagues In Europe: Which Are The Top 6 Leagues In Europe?

Ranking The Best Leagues In Europe: Which Are The Top 6 Leagues In Europe?—The question of which domestic football league is the best can be subjective and may result in endless debates. To avoid this, a ranking was created based on essential statistics in the game rather than personal preferences. The top 6 European football leagues are based on this ranking system.

  1. Dutch Eredivisie

The Eredivisie comprises 18 teams that play twice against each other. The bottom two clubs at the end of the season are relegated, and the top two from the second division are promoted. The club, finishing third from the bottom, plays in a promotion playoff against the eight high-placed clubs from the second division. Ajax has won the most national titles with 35, followed by PSV Eindhoven with 24 and Feyenoord with 15. Feyenoord are currently leading the standings with three rounds of matches to go, but the jury is still out there. You can make your prediction with Betway if you think PSV can stage an upset.

  1. French Ligue 1

Ligue 1 is the top football league in France and was established in 1932 as National before being renamed Division 1 a year later. It became Ligue 1 in 2002. AS Saint-Étienne is the most successful club with ten league titles, and Olympique Lyonnais holds the record for most consecutive titles (seven between 2002 and 2008). Clubs play 38 matches throughout the season, from August to May. Olympique de Marseille holds the record for the most seasons among the elite, while Paris Saint-Germain holds the league record for longevity with 47 consecutive seasons. Ligue 1 is one of the top national leagues, ranked just behind the top leagues of England, Spain, Germany, and Italy.

  1. German Bundesliga

The Bundesliga was established in 1962, and its first season began in 1963. The league and Germany’s other football leagues have undergone several structural and organizational changes. Bayern Munich has won the league title the most, with 30 titles. However, other clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV, Borussia Monchengladbach, and VfB Stuttgart have also won the championship. The Bundesliga is considered one of the top national leagues. It is ranked fourth in Europe by UEFA’s league coefficient ranking for the 2020-21 season, based on the clubs’ performances in European competitions over the last five years. It is also the world’s top football league in terms of average attendance. Bayern are not looking like the outright champions for the first time in many years despite leading the log. All remaining matches are available on the Betway betting platform.

  1. Italian Serie A

The Serie A of Italy is ranked third in UEFA rankings. The Italian Football Championship was transformed into a single-tier league from the 1929–30 season onwards. Pre-1929 championship titles are officially recognized with equal importance as later ones. The league comprises famous clubs, including Juventus, AC Milan, Napoli, and Inter Milan, all founding members of the G-14, and the European Club Association (ECA). Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen led Napoli to the 2022/23 Serie A title with a few games to spare.

  1. Spanish La Liga

La Liga is ranked second in the UEFA rankings. Since its inception, 62 teams have competed in La Liga, with nine crowned champions. Real Madrid has won the championship a record 34 times, while Barcelona has won it 26 times. Real Madrid and Barcelona dominated La Liga in the 1950s, with Real Madrid winning 14 titles in the 1960s and 1970s. Athletic Club and Real Sociedad won two Liga titles each in the 1980s and 1990s, alongside Real Madrid’s prominence. Since the 1990s, Barcelona has been the dominant team, winning 16 titles, while other champions include Atlético Madrid, Valencia, and Deportivo La Coruña.

  1. English Premier League

The English Premier League, also known as EPL, is the home of famous football teams such as Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and now, Manchester City. City are heavy favourites with Betway to secure their 3rd successive title despite Arsenal leading for most of the season. The league’s accumulated television rights deals were worth £3.1 billion a year in 2019-20, with Sky and BT Group securing the domestic rights to broadcast games. The league is the most-watched sports league globally, broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people.
