Expert Calls For Adoption Of ICT In Food Production

Expert Calls For Adoption Of ICT In Food Production—Dr Amana Matthew, an agriculture expert, has called on farmers and extension workers to adopt information technology and innovations to enhance food production to ensure food security in the country.

Matthew made the call on Thursday in Lafia at a one day workshop on climate smart agriculture technologies for extension workers and farmers in north central geopolitical Zone.

Mathew, who is a lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture, Nasarawa State University and the coordinator of the workshop, said the Programne intended to expose farmers and extension workers to the utilisation of information technology in farming.

 

He said the training would also expose extension workers and farmers to recent climate predictions by the Nigerian Metrological Agency.

He called on farmers to continue to work closely with relevant agencies on climate change and predictions to be abreast of information in their profession who would help to them to practice sustainable farming.

Declaring the workshop open, the Dean Faculty, Agriculture Nasarawa State University, Prof. James Jayeoba said adequate information about the effects of climate change remained the most efficient way to achieve optimal food production,

Jayeoba, who was represented by the Deputy Dean, Dr Haruna Suleiman, also told the participants that constant engagement with farmers and extension workers was vital to successful agricultural practice.

He called on the participants to ensure that they also trained other farmers, especially those at the rural areas in their various states.

Some of the participants, Mr Anpe Mathias, Plateau Chairman of Potato Farmers Association and Mr Ogidi Enoyi from Benue state, said the training would assist farmers in addressing some of the climatic-related challenges.

The workshop also featured demonstrations on how to use sensors to gather and transmit data about soil and air
