This reliable platform gathered that The Oyun Baptist Secondary School, Ijagbo in Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara state has been closed by the state government following the violence that trailed the controversial hijab dress code in the school.
According to reports, the state government took the decision after its state police command said that dangerous weapons were freely used during the violence that broke out between the Muslim and Christian students in the school over the use of hijab.
The state Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, had also earlier warned stakeholders in the education sector at a meeting that the state government would not tolerate the disturbance of the peace in the state by any means.
The commissioner condemned in strong terms the resort to violence in the government-owned school, saying: “Such discrimination will not be tolerated in any public-owned institution in the state.”
She said: “While the government and security agencies continue to work with leaders on all sides, it hereby directs the immediate shutdown of the school pending the resolution of the issue.”
Commenting on the incident, the spokesman of the state Police Command said that tactical units and conventional policemen were deployed to Ijagbo and they have successfully restored peace in the school and made efforts to ensure no further breakdown of law and order.
While the state government had sent a delegation to the school to find a lasting solution to the crisis, the state Commissioner of Police, Tuesday Assayomo, appealed to the warring parties to embrace peace and shun any acts that could jeopardize the current peace in the area.
