Chairman, Lagos chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANATAP), Makinde Adeniran, said the wife broke the news.
Aleja was admitted at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) after he slumped at home weeks ago.
The filmmaker reportedly went into coma but was revived at the hospital. He gave up the ghost while recuperating.
