JUST IN: Uganda’s Bobi Wine Arrested During Protest—Opposition candidate and flag bearer of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in the recently, concluded Ugandan election, Bobi Wine has been arrested while leading a protest against the detention of many of his supporters in the aftermath of a presidential election.
The singer, lawmaker and presidential contender had called for protests following a crackdown on his supporters and aides.
“…He led MPs and other leaders in a peaceful protest against the abduction, torture and murder of his supporters. The protest was taking place at City Square, Kampala,” Wine’s office said.
By the time of filing this story, they had been detained at Kampala Central Police Station.
Their arrest comes hours after Mr Museveni in his televised address Sunday night warned Bobi Wine and his NUP members of causing chaos ahead of his swearing ceremony later May.
“They have been planning that they will stop swearing in of the president. They won’t. They plan all sorts of crazy things including killing their own Opposition people to say it is the government,” Mr Museveni said.
