    The federal government has demanded urgent accountability from South Africa following the deaths of two Nigerians and a wave of anti-foreigner protests, warning that the incidents threaten diplomatic relations and the safety of its nationals.

     

    The government issued the strong position after inviting South Africa’s acting high commissioner to Nigeria, Lesoli Machele, to a meeting in Abuja on Monday with the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Dunoma Ahmed.

    According to a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, at the centre of the dispute are the deaths of Nnaemeka Matthew Ekpeyong and Kelvin Chidiebere Amaramiro, both allegedly linked to assaults by South African security personnel.

    “It was reported that on 21 April 2026, Nnaemeka Matthew Andrew Ekpeyong died while in the custody of the Tshwane Metro Police Department.

     

    “Before his death, he reportedly sustained injuries attributed to personnel of the South African National Defence Force,” the ministry stated.

    The government added that “Reports further indicate that a search of his residence yielded no incriminating evidence.

    “The circumstances of his detention and death have raised concerns regarding the conduct of the security personnel involved.”

    Nigerian singer, Habeeb Badmus, popularly known as Portable, has alleged that his defeat to Carter Efe at the Chaos in the Ring 4 event in Lagos was manipulated.

    Portable claimed the fight was stopped unfairly to prevent organisers from paying out huge sums allegedly staked on his victory.

    The singer lost the celebrity boxing bout by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the contest 27-30 in favour of Efe after three rounds.

    The Genius Media Nigeria reports that the result ended Portable’s reign as celebrity boxing champion, following his previous victories over Charles Okocha and Speed Darlington.

    ‘They Couldn’t Pay ₦23 Billion Bet On Me’

    Reacting after the bout, the ZaZoo crooner insisted that he was cheated and that the outcome was influenced by money allegedly wagered on him.

    “It was cheating. They couldn’t pay the money, so they rigged it. We are the ones who won, so they ripped me. They couldn’t pay the ₦23 billion that people bet on me. If Portable wins, they can never pay the money,” he said.

    Portable argued that he should have been allowed to continue fighting, saying the decision to end the bout was premature.

    He compared the situation to his earlier celebrity boxing fight against actor Charles Okocha, insisting that his physical condition during the Carter Efe bout was not enough reason to stop the contest.

    “They should have let us keep fighting. They said I was panting, I did the same against Charles Okocha. All they should have done was pour water on me so I could go and beat him, but they said the fight was over,” he said.

    Portable Demands ₦200 Million Streaming Money

    Portable also accused the organisers of owing him money from the event’s streaming revenue.

    The singer demanded that he be paid what he described as his share of the proceeds.

    “To the organisers, I want my stream money amounting to about N200 million. Just give me my money before I cause trouble,” he said.

    His outburst added another twist to the aftermath of the bout, which had attracted attention from fans of entertainment and celebrity boxing.

    Meanwhile, a Canada-based Nigerian doctor, Arinze Onwumelu, has advised Portable to undergo a brain scan following the fight.

    Onwumelu, popularly known as Dr Zo, warned that some of the punches delivered during the bout may have affected sensitive areas of the singer’s head.

    He urged those close to Portable to take him for medical checks to rule out internal injury.

    “Anybody who knows Portable should take him to the hospital for an MRI and brain test; there may be an artery that might have been damaged,” he said.

    The doctor also called for better safety standards in celebrity boxing events, saying headguards should be made compulsory for participants in such exhibition bouts.

    Despite the defeat, allegations of foul play and the medical concerns raised after the contest, Portable said the birth of his son on the same night mattered more to him than the boxing belt.

    The singer said becoming a father again placed the result of the fight in proper perspective.

    “My wife just gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. I value that more than a belt. You can buy the belt, but not my child,” he said.

    Portable’s defeat to Carter Efe brings an end to his unbeaten run in celebrity boxing, but the singer has continued to insist that he was unfairly denied victory.

    Nigerian businessman, Jim Ovia, has retired from his position as the Group Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc.

     

    THe Genius Media Nigeria reports that this was confirmed in a corporate statement released by the bank on Tuesday, May 5.

     

    The statement explained that Ovia stepped down from the position following the expiration of his tenure in line with regulatory requirements.

     

    Zenith explained that Ovia completed the mandatory 12-year tenure permitted under corporate governance guidelines for financial holding companies, non-interest banks, and payment service banks in Nigeria.

     

    Ovia, who founded Zenith Bank and has been a central figure in its growth trajectory, was credited by the Board for providing strong leadership, strategic direction, and effective oversight throughout his time as chairman.

    He is succeeded by Mustapha Bello.

     

    Until he was appointed Chairman, Bello was a non-executive director in the bank.

    Engr. Mustafa Bello graduated with B.Engr. (Civil Engineering), from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1978 with Second Class Upper Division, and won the Shell prize for best project and thesis for Faculty of Engineering in 1978.

    He served in the Directorate of Quartering and Engineering Service (Nigerian Army) between 1978 and 1979. He later joined the Niger State Housing Corporation between 1980 and 1983 as a Senior Civil Engineer.

    He served as a cabinet Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as the Federal Minister of Commerce between 1999 and 2002. He was subsequently appointed Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Investments Promotion Commission (NIPC) between November 2003 and February 2014.

    He is currently the Chairman of Invest-in-Northern Nig. Limited, a special purpose vehicle for the economic and social transformation of the Northern Nigerian Economy.

    He has been involved in several projects in Nigeria, including the CAC online project in 2002, developing a WTO-consistent Trade Policy for the Federal Republic of Nigeria, etc.

    He has attended several conferences, missions, and meetings and represented the Federal Government of Nigeria.

    Zenith Bank Plc has announced its unaudited results for the first quarter ended 31st March 2026, with a 6% growth in Gross Earnings, from N950 billion reported in Q1 2025 to N1.01 trillion in Q1 2026. This is despite the challenging operating environment and tightening monetary policy stance.

     

    From the unaudited statement of account submitted to the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) on Thursday, 30th April 2026, this growth was driven by increase in interest income and non-interest income. The increase in interest income was primarily due to the expansion of the Bank’s risk asset portfolio, supported by disciplined, risk adjusted pricing. Interest expense moderated by 5% YoY in Q1 2026 underscored by a continued optimisation of the Bank’s deposit mix and funding structure. This resulted in a 7% growth in net interest income from N591 billion in Q1 2025 to N634 billion in Q1 2026. Non-interest income also improved 19% year on year, rising from N89 billion to N106 billion, highlighting an improvement in fees and commissions and higher contributions from other operating income streams. This performance reflects stronger customer activity and deeper transaction volumes across key business channels.

     

    As a result, the Group recorded a 3% year on year increase in profit before tax, which rose to N361 billion compared with N351 billion in Q1 2025. Profit after tax also increased by 1% to N314 billion.

     

    Profitability was further supported by a decline in cost of funds to 3.76% in Q1 2026 from 3.90% in Q1 2025; while cost of risk moderated to 2% in Q1 2026, reflecting a prudent and proactive risk management stance in an elevated yield environment.

     

    Gross loans increased by 9% from N11.06 trillion as at full year 2025 to N12.04 trillion in Q1 2026, reflecting the continued commitment to carefully deploying credit into high growth sectors of the economy that enhance portfolio returns. Asset quality strengthened as Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio eased to 3.79%, from 3.82% reported in December 2025, underpinned by disciplined credit risk management. Customer deposits rose to N24.47 trillion in Q1 2026, while total assets increased by 2% to N32.01 trillion over the same period.

     

    Return on Average Equity (ROAE) and Return on Average Assets (ROAA) stood at 24.9% and 4% respectively, supported by strong top line earnings and enhanced balance sheet efficiency. Net interest margin (NIM) strengthened to 12.5%, up from 10.3% in Q1 2025, underscoring the Group’s ability to preserve its margins and deliver improved shareholder returns. Prudential ratios remained strong and comfortably above regulatory requirements.

     

    The Group’s Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) and Liquidity Ratio stood at 23.5% and 71% respectively, while the coverage ratio remained strong at 169%, reinforcing the Bank’s resilient capital and liquidity position.

     

    The Group’s Q1 2026 performance underscores its continued focus on sustaining high quality earnings growth, further strengthening asset quality, and deepening customer engagement through continued digital innovation. The Bank remains firmly committed to delivering sustainable growth anchored on sound corporate governance, prudent risk oversight, and disciplined capital allocation.

    The Genius Media Nigeria reports that the latest development comes barely 48 hours after the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, picked the All Progressives Congress (APC) forms for the same Kogi Central election.

    In a post on her Facebook page on Monday, Natasha lauded her husband, Emmanuel Oritsejolomi Uduaghan, for encouraging her to take the step toward the 2027 Kogi Central Senatorial election.

    The lawmaker noted that she would not have purchased the nomination form if her husband had objected to the ambition.

    She wrote, “If you had said no, I would not have taken this step towards the 2027 Kogi Central Senatorial election.

    “But you did not. Instead, you looked into my heart, understood the depth of my purpose in consideration of our people’s calling, and chose to stand firmly beside me.

    “By taking it upon yourself, out of your deep and unwavering belief in me, to purchase my 2027 senatorial nomination form, you did far more than support a political ambition.”

    Recall that Natasha has vowed not to back down for Bello, insisting that she will contest and win her re-election.

    Angry youths on Monday blocked operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) from whisking social media influencer, Justice Mark Chidiebere, widely known as Justice Crack, away from the Federal High Court premises in Abuja.

    The incident caused a brief disruption within the court premises as SSS operatives attempted to escort the influencer out after proceedings.

    The youths formed a human blockade around the operatives and repeatedly chanted “Free Justice Crack,” demanding his immediate release and describing his detention as unjust.

    During the protest, some influencers and advocates, including Omoyele Sowore and Peter Akah, were among the protesters.

    The confrontation temporarily disrupted movement within the court area before security operatives overpowered the protesters, taking the influencer away from the premises.

    Apparently, he was first arrested by the Nigerian Army and then handed over to the SSS over a social media post he made about soldiers’ welfare.

    On Saturday, the Nigerian Army confirmed arresting the blogger and social media influencer.

    The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, a colonel, aid he was arrested after preliminary investigations revealed he had conversations with soldiers that bordered on subversion.

    The Army said its attention was drawn to a social media post by Mr Chidiebere where he highlighted complaints made by some soldiers regarding their feeding and general welfare.

    The statement said a deeper look at the matter revealed that the influencer’s engagement with the soldiers went beyond welfare concerns.

    “Preliminary report reveals that the soldiers discussed a wide range of issues with Justice Chidiebere, who seemed to be inciting soldiers to create discontent within the system.

    “An example was a chat bordering on subversion which Chidiebere had with the soldiers,” the statement said.

    The Iranian warning came after Donald Trump vowed to free commercial ships stranded in the waterway as part of so-called “Project Freedom”.

    Trump had pledged to guide ships out of the “restricted waterway” from Monday morning in a “humanitarian gesture”.

    The US president said the move intended to “free up people, companies, and Countries that have done absolutely nothing wrong”, who he called “victims of circumstance”.

    In another post, Lizzy Anjorin also reacted to Iyabo Ojo’s partner Paulo Okoye, over his suggestion that their disagreement should be settled in a boxing ring. She challenged him to a 10 round fight with her husband before any match involving her and Iyabo Ojo.

    The latest exchange adds to a long running dispute between both actresses, which has played out publicly on social media over the years, with repeated back and forth comments and accusations.

    At different points in the conflict, Iyabo Ojo had shared a video mocking Lizzy Anjorin, which escalated tensions between both sides. Lizzy later made allegations against Iyabo, leading to further public exchanges and legal threats.

    Iyabo Ojo had demanded a public apology and threatened legal action over alleged defamatory statements, including a compensation claim.

    In 2024, a Lagos court dismissed a 1 billion naira defamation suit filed by Iyabo Ojo against Lizzy Anjorin, marking a legal setback in one of their cases. The public disagreement between both actresses has however continued to resurface through online exchanges.

    “Furthermore, the meeting is expected to, in particular, formally set the tone for the 2026/2027 admission exercise while impressing it on attendees the need to adhere strictly to stipulated guidelines.

     

    “Attendees at the 2026 meeting would include critical stakeholders such as vice-chancellors, rectors, provosts, registrars and their admission officers.

     

    “Others are regulatory bodies ranging from the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), to the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), among others.”

     

    It added that goodwill messages are expected from agencies including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and other stakeholders.

     

    Benjamin further said the event will feature the 6th edition of the National Tertiary Admissions Performance-Merit Awards (NATAP-M), aimed at promoting compliance with admission guidelines and improving standards in tertiary education.

    In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the schedule reflects the party’s commitment to internal democracy, orderliness, and compliance with electoral guidelines.

     

    According to him, the sale of nomination forms will run from May 5 to May 10, 2026, while submission of completed forms is slated for May 11 to May 13.

    “Screening of aspirants will take place from May 14 to May 15, 2026, followed by the publication of screening results on May 17, 2026,” the statement said.

     

    He added that appeals would be heard between May 18 and May 19, with the final list of cleared aspirants to be released on May 20.

     

    Abdullahi disclosed that the party’s primary elections will begin on May 21, with state houses of assembly, house of representatives, and senate primaries holding simultaneously at the ward level.

     

    “The Governorship primaries will take place on May 22, 2026, while the Presidential Primary is scheduled for May 25, 2026,” he said.

    “This will be followed by a meeting of the National Executive Committee on May 26, 2026, and the Special National Convention on May 27, 2026, where final ratifications will be made.”

     

    He further outlined the cost of nomination forms for various positions, stating that governorship forms will go for N50 million, senate for N20 million, house of representatives for N10 million, and state house of assembly for N3 million.

     

    To encourage broader participation, Abdullahi said the party has introduced concessions, offering a 50 percent discount for youths and a 25 percent discount for women and persons with disabilities.

     

    “We call on all our members, stakeholders, and aspirants to adhere strictly to the outlined schedule and guidelines,” he added.

    He clarified that his departure from the ADC was not due to personal issues with the party leadership, including former Senate President David Mark or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, both of whom he said he continues to respect.

    According to him, his decision was driven by what he described as the infiltration of unresolved political conflicts and recurring legal and internal disputes that have distracted the party from national issues.

    “Let me state clearly: my decision to leave the ADC is not because our highly respected Chairman, Senator David Mark, treated me badly, nor because my leader and elder brother, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, or any other respected leaders did anything personally wrong to me. I will continue to respect them.

    “However, the same Nigerian state and its agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party that forced me to leave now appear to be finding their way into the ADC, with endless court cases, internal battles, suspicion, and division, instead of focusing on deeper national problems and playing politics built more on control and exclusion than on service and nation-building,” he said.

    Obi said he has no personal desperation for political office, stressing that his focus remains on national welfare rather than positions.

    “I am not desperate to be President, Vice President or Senate President. I am desperate to see a Nigeria where people can live in dignity, without hunger, fear, or displacement,” he said.

    Despite leaving the party, Obi reaffirmed his belief in a better Nigeria, insisting that competent and compassionate leadership remains possible.

    The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has adjusted petrol pump prices across its retail outlets nationwide, with Lagos new rates rising from N1,230 to N1,320 per litre.

    In Abuja, the petrol price stood at N1,364, while Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe recorded some of the highest prices, compared to the relatively lower rates in parts of the South-West

    The latest pricing reflects ongoing fluctuations in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market, influenced by changes in the global oil market.

    Breakdown of petrol prices by state

    Based on state-by-state data,

    Yobe recorded the highest petrol price at N1,395 per litre, followed by Borno (N1,390) and Adamawa (N1,385). Conversely, Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo recorded some of the lowest prices at N1,320 per litre, while Osun (N1,325) and Ondo (N1,330) also ranked among the relatively cheaper states.     Dangote increases petrol prices Dangote Refinery has increased its petrol ex-depot price by N75, raising it from N1,200 per litre to N1,275 per litre, while the coastal price has risen to N1,215 per litre, Petroleumprice reports.

    Additionally, other oil marketers, including Ardova and MRS, have raised their pump prices above N1,300 to reflect market changes.
