There has been no stopping him from there, with a transfer to Napoli having been earned in 2013.
Five seasons in Naples delivered 160 appearances, while he earned senior international recognition and, in the process, became one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe.
Chelsea secured his signature back in July, with Premier League champions Manchester City seen off in that transfer battle, and he is preparing for the start of the competitive action.
The first piece of silverware will be on the line in Sunday’s Community Shield, before attention switches to Premier League matters.
