Former Nigeria international, Segun Odegbami, has made public his intention to run for the governorship of Ogun State in the coming elections.

Odegbami, nicknamed Mathematical for his precise style of play, was instrumental as then Green Eagles clinched the country’s first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980.

The 65-year-old, who retired around three decades ago, has remained actively involved in the game in the capacity of administration and punditry.

It now appears Odegbami, who is currently in Russia for the FIFA World Cup, is set to break new grounds after declaring his intention to delve into mainstream politics.

“I am going to stay around for a little while longer, still watch and report any interesting events around here, and properly think through my next project,” the ex-3SC forward revealed in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

“Now more than ever before I know for sure why I want to contest for the office of governor of my State.

“The thought of a Footballer in government house excites many who have heard the rumour here. It will surely attract all manner of reactions back in my State.

“Politics in the most sophisticated environment in Nigeria, for all things progressive, may never be the same again. I am looking forward to the challenge in faith and with hope.”

With 22 goals in 47 international appearances, Odegbami is Nigeria’s second top scorer of all time behind Rashidi Yekini.
