Super Eagles secured another vital three points as the team defeated Lesotho 4-2 in Group L of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Sunday at the Setsotho Stadium.

The Scorpions of Lesotho wasted no time to announce their intent as the team struck first in the 11th minute through Masoabi Nkoto that sent the home fans into frenzy.

Despite Lesotho’s goal, the Super Eagles continued to pile more pressure on their defence and eventually got rewarded for their patience as Alex Iwobi leveled parity for Nigeria in the 26th
minute.

Twelve minutes later, Nigeria extended their lead as Samuel Chukwueze, who was a thorn in the flesh of Lesotho smashed home the second goal.

In the 76th minute, Victor Osimhen eventually crowned his efforts with a goal before earned his brace with a quality finish in the 85th minute to all but sealed victory for the Super Eagles.

Lesotho however, scored another goal in the 90th minute via Awaziem’s own goal.

Super Eagles Player Ratings

Daniel Akpeyi – 5: A largely quiet game for Akpeyi, with Lesotho not threatening the Super Eagles goalkeeper much. Could not have done much to stop the two goals he conceded.

Ola Aina – 6: Was the least of Nigeria’s problems defensively. The Udinese defender was rather diligent in his defensive duties and a threat going forward.

Troost Ekong – 6: Another showing to point towards a resurgence after a slow start in the early part of the game. Dealt with the threat of Hlompho Kalake well, shutting the wing-back down effectively.

Chidozie Awaziem– 5.5: More composed in the second half, when Nigeria was barely troubled, Collins continued to display a well-assured performance against Lesotho after impressing in the team’s 2-1 over Benin. Gifted Lesotho with an own goal he conceded in the 90th minute.

Semi Ajayi – 5.5: A well-improved performance even though he was jittery in the early part of the game. Still showed some element of defensive quality against Lesotho.

Wilfred Ndidi – 6.5: Nigeria’s Mr. Dependable was at it yet again. Once more, Ndidi proved that he is a dangerous player, showing the adventurous side of his game time and again. Tireless in his defensive output, providing cover to the Super Eagles backline with aplomb.

Joe Aribo- 6.5: Showed once again that he has added layers to his game, covering up for the defenders behind him. His ability to composure and dribbling ability made him stand out against Lesotho.

Simon Moses – 6.5: His typical work-rate was there to be seen all throughout. Bar the odd wasteful moment, this was another strong showing by Simon, who is finally fulfilling the role left behind by retired SuperEagles winger, Victor Moses.

Samuel Chukwueze – 7: His link-up with Osimhen and Simon Moses was a stuff of delight and sign of things to come for years. Proved to be a handful for Lesotho as his darting runs and dribbling skills gave the home team sleepless time. Scored a beautiful goal that put Nigeria ahead against Lesotho.

Iwobi – 7: Perhaps, one of his best games for the Super Eagles as he dazzles through the Lesotho midfield with ease. His tricky movement creates pockets of space for his other teammates. Netted the goal that ensured the team level parity against Lesotho.

Victor Osimhen – 7: Showed a deadly striker’s instinct to grab the third goal of the game for the Super Eagles. His movement was a source of grave concern for Lesotho defenders, as it allowed Simon Moses and Samuel Chukwueze to occupy advanced positions. Growing into his role with each passing game.

SUBSTITUTES

Musa Ahmed – 5: His cameo role had a slight effect on the game as he was able to use his pace at will.

Ramon Azeez – 4.5: Had little in the game.

Samuel Kalu – 4.5; Had little in the game.
