INEC Assures PWDs Of Inclusive Participation In Zamfara Ahead of 2027 General Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring inclusive electoral participation for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Zamfara ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
Dr Mahmoud Isah, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Zamfara, gave the assurance while declaring open a sensitisation programme on electoral disability interventions held in Gusau on Friday.
Isah said the programme was organised to deepen understanding of the challenges faced by PWDs during electoral activities and to identify practical measures to ensure their effective participation in the democratic process.
The REC stressed that the right to vote belongs to every eligible citizen, including persons with disabilities.
According to him, disability should not be a barrier to accessing voter education, collecting Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), accessing polling units or exercising franchise.
“As we prepare for the 2027 general elections, INEC must continue to promote inclusive electoral practices, accessible information, respectful treatment and appropriate assistance for voters who require it,” he said.
He urged Electoral Officers (EOs) and Disability Desk Officers across the 14 Local Government Areas of the state to work closely with organisations representing PWDs.
Isah said they should identify barriers to PWDs’ participation and ensure that disability-related concerns receive appropriate attention in planning and implementation.
The REC also encouraged representatives of PWDs to share their experiences, highlight practical challenges and offer constructive recommendations to help the commission improve electoral access across the state.
“The engagement should not be regarded as a mere formality, but as a platform for dialogue, learning, collaboration and development of practical solutions that can make a meaningful difference.
“As electoral administrators, INEC’s responsibility extends beyond conducting elections to ensuring that eligible citizens are treated fairly and respectfully and that avoidable barriers to participation are addressed within the law and approved guidelines,” Isah added.
He expressed confidence that the discussions would strengthen cooperation between INEC officials and PWDs and improve collective preparedness for inclusive and credible elections in the state.
