The Obidient Movement, led by its National Coordinator, Dr Yunusa Tanko, has warned against what it described as threats to Nigeria’s democracy, declaring that it would not remain silent over developments it believes could undermine the country’s democratic process.

The group made the statement during an emergency world press conference where it reacted to a recent Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja affecting the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a political platform linked with opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We will not sit back and watch democracy die by court order,” the movement said, while expressing concern over the impact of judicial decisions on political participation and citizens’ choices.

The Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja had on June 26, 2026, set aside an earlier judgment recognising the NDC, a development that triggered reactions from members of the Obidient Movement.

Dr Yunusa Tanko described the ruling as a concerning development, alleging that it could affect opposition participation and the country’s multi-party democracy ahead of the 2027 elections.

The movement called on Nigerians to remain committed to protecting democratic values while urging institutions responsible for safeguarding democracy to uphold fairness and independence.

The group maintained that citizens must be allowed to freely choose their preferred political representatives without actions that could limit democratic competition.

The development has further intensified political conversations ahead of 2027, as opposition groups continue to position themselves for the next general election.

The Obidient Movement said it would continue to engage through lawful means while monitoring developments surrounding the NDC and Nigeria’s democratic process.
