The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into a self-acclaimed prophet, Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, popularly known as Prophet Sunday Koboko, over allegations that he defrauded members of his ministry of N70.39 million.

The anti-graft agency disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X handle on Wednesday, saying operatives of its Enugu Zonal Directorate were investigating multiple petitions against the cleric.

According to the EFCC, Ajuluchukwucheya allegedly obtained money from church members through various schemes, including promises of spiritual interventions and investment opportunities.

One of the petitioners, Okey Uwakwe, alleged that the prophet collected N6.23 million from him for spiritual works intended to persuade his brother, who had been living abroad since 1997, to return to Nigeria.

Uwakwe further claimed that he paid N3.25 million to the cleric to conduct spiritual exercises aimed at helping his childless sister-in-law conceive after more than 15 years without a child.

The EFCC also alleged that the suspect told members of his ministry that he had won a N33 billion lottery and encouraged them to invest money with assurances that they would receive dividends from the purported winnings.

According to the commission, Uwakwe contributed an additional N3.35 million to the scheme and paid another N500,000 towards a rice-processing business the cleric allegedly valued at N1 billion.

The petitioner claimed to have paid a total of N13.33 million to the suspect without receiving any benefit.

The anti-graft agency said several other members of the ministry later came forward with similar complaints during the course of investigations.

Some of the complainants alleged that the suspect sold items described as “holy ghost thunder”, “miracle stickers” and “spiritual dragons”, promising prosperity and solutions to personal challenges.

Quoting one of the alleged victims, the EFCC said, “He asked me to do what they tagged ‘holy ghost thunder’, believing it was going to solve my problems. I bought it, and after all the payments, nothing happened, and my problems still persisted.”

The commission said preliminary findings indicate that the total amount allegedly collected from members of the ministry stands at N70.39 million.

The EFCC added that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be charged to court upon their conclusion.
