The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged his critics to provide evidence that he misappropriated funds donated to the Labour Party (LP) during the 2023 general elections, declaring that he would stop campaigning if such claims are proven.
The Genius Media Nigeria reports that Obi made the declaration on Tuesday during an interview on Nevon Media hosted by journalist Rufai Oseni, while responding to allegations that he and human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, siphoned donations meant for the LP’s 2023 presidential campaign.
The former Anambra State governor described the allegation as baseless and challenged those behind the claims to present verifiable evidence to support their assertions.
According to him, accusations of financial misconduct against him have continued without any proof being presented to the public.
“I don’t go by people talking nonsensically and listen to them. He said that we took from the Labour Party’s account ₦10 billion or $30 million. Where is the account?” Obi asked.
He questioned the basis of the allegation, insisting that no evidence had been produced to show the existence of such funds or any irregularity in the management of campaign donations.
Obi said he was compiling a list of individuals who had made allegations against him and would soon challenge them to substantiate their claims.
“I’m going to include every accuser very soon in the list of the people I want to come out and prove that I took money from the Labour Party’s account or any financial mismanagement allegation,” he said.
The NDC candidate maintained that his record in public office and political engagements remained open to scrutiny, stressing that he had nothing to hide.
“Look, if anyone can prove that I took one per cent of Labour Party’s donations, I will stop campaigning,” Obi stated.
