A security analyst, Ayo, founder of Sepril23NG Security and Consulting Service, has raised concerns over alleged large-scale fraud operations being carried out from within Nigerian correctional facilities, including Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison and Benin Medium Security Prison.

Ayo said recent investigations using phone-tracking data suggest that inmates in some prisons have continued to access mobile phones with internet capabilities, enabling them to allegedly run online scams and fraud schemes while in custody.

According to findings shared by the analyst, multiple phone numbers traced in recent months were reportedly located within prison facilities, including one case linked to Kirikiri and at least three others traced to Benin prison in April 2026 alone.

He said the data, supported by GPS-based location tracking, indicated that some of the suspected fraud-linked devices were active inside correctional centres, raising fresh concerns over internal security lapses.

Ayo warned that the development has made video calls and online identity verification increasingly unreliable, describing them as tools that can now be manipulated by individuals operating from prison environments.

He further noted that in one of the tracked cases, a suspected scammer’s number was traced directly to Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, while additional cases in Benin prison suggested a possible recurring pattern of activity.

The analyst alleged that inmates are able to maintain digital communication channels, which they reportedly use to continue fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting victims outside prison walls.

He cautioned members of the public and businesses against relying solely on video calls for verification, stressing that such methods may now create a false sense of security in digital interactions.

Correctional authorities have yet to issue an official response to the claims at the time of filing this report.
