Former Nigerian international Henry Nwosu has died at the age of 62 after battling a prolonged illness in Lagos.

The news of his death was announced by former Nigeria national football team captain Segun Odegbami, who revealed that Nwosu died around 4:00 a.m. on Saturday.

In a message announcing the sad development, Odegbami said it was with “deep pain” that he conveyed the passing of the football icon, fondly nicknamed “Youngest Millionaire.”

“Henry Nwosu passes on!

After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 a.m. this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been in intensive care since Wednesday.

It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven,” Odegbami wrote.

Youngest star of Nigeria’s historic AFCON triumph

Nwosu earned the nickname “Youngest Millionaire” after becoming the youngest player in the Nigerian squad that won the country’s first continental title at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations.

He was the youngest member of the team when Nigeria lifted the trophy in front of home fans in Lagos, marking a historic moment for the national team.

Career beyond playing days

The Imo State-born midfielder enjoyed a distinguished career in Nigerian football and also contributed to the game after retirement.

Nwosu later served as an assistant coach when Nigeria’s U23 team won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, continuing his service to the development of the sport in the country.

His passing marks the loss of one of the key figures from Nigeria’s golden generation that secured the nation’s first continental football title.
