BREAKING: Last Minute Lamine Yamal Goal Saves Barcelona Vs Newcastle United

Newcastle United have drawn 1-1 with Barcelona in their Champions League round of 16 first leg today

Newcastle United were denied a first-leg victory in their UEFA Champions League (UCL) last-16 tie with Barcelona, conceding a stoppage-time penalty as Lamine Yamal made it 1-1 on the night.

Newcastle Dominate but Struggle to Convert Chances

Newcastle started the match with intensity, pressing high and creating several promising opportunities against the Spanish giants. Eddie Howe’s side looked determined to gain an advantage before traveling to Spain for the return leg.

One of the most notable moments came in the second half when Barnes struck the post with a curling effort.

The rebound fell kindly for Joelinton, who tapped the ball into the net, but celebrations were quickly cut short as the assistant referee ruled the goal out for offside.

Despite the setback, Newcastle continued to push forward, with the home crowd sensing a potential upset against the European powerhouse.

Barnes Breaks the Deadlock

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 86th minute.

Jacob Murphy combined cleverly in the build-up before delivering a cross into the penalty area.

Barnes met the delivery with a sharp volley that slipped past Barcelona goalkeeper Inaki Garcia, sending the home supporters into celebration.

The goal appeared to reward Newcastle’s persistent attacking play and put them in a strong position heading into the closing minutes.

Late Drama Turns the Game

As the match moved into added time, Newcastle looked poised to protect their narrow lead. However, the game took a dramatic turn in the dying seconds.

Barcelona’s Dani Olmo drove into the penalty area before being brought down by defender Malick Thiaw. The referee immediately pointed to the spot, sparking protests from Newcastle players and fans.

With virtually the final kick of the game, Yamal stepped up and calmly placed the penalty into the bottom corner, beating goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and silencing the home crowd.

Advantage Barcelona Ahead of Second Leg

The late equaliser leaves the tie finely balanced but gives Barcelona a psychological edge as they prepare to host the return leg at Camp Nou.

For Newcastle, the result will feel particularly frustrating after a disciplined defensive display and a strong overall performance.

While Howe’s side proved they could compete with one of Europe’s most decorated clubs, they will now need to deliver another strong performance away from home if they hope to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

The second leg is scheduled to take place on March 18 in Barcelona, where the winner will secure a place in the last eight of the competition.
