Tottenham Hotspur held Manchester City to a 2-2 draw to add even more momentum to Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge.

When Spurs and City walked down the tunnel for half time, few would have predicted the contest to end in a draw. Thomas Frank’s side were flat and insipid in the first half, and City took advantage by storming into a 2-0 lead through Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo.

Even Gary Neville, who was commentating on the contest, tore into the anxious and silent atmosphere. However, Dominic Solanke woke the crowd up with two goals in 17 minutes, including a stunning ‘Scorpion Kick’ finish to level proceedings.

Spurs looked the more likely to win the contest from that moment, but could not quite create another clear cut chance. While Frank will be buoyed by his side’s resilience, Neville said: “Arsenal are the real winners.”

The draw means the Gunners will end this weekend six points clear at the top of the Premier League table. They were already boosted by Aston Villa losing to 10-man Brentford at Villa Park.

Dango Ouattara’s goal just before half time was enough for the Bees to secure a 1-0 victory over Unai Emery’s side, despite Kevin Schade getting a straight red card in the 42nd minute. Villa and City’s results have effectively made Arsenal’s 4-0 away triumph over Leeds United a six-point result.

The Gunners eased to victory thanks to goals from Marin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Jesus. There was huge pressure on the north Londoners having lost at home to Manchester United one week previously.

But the dominant victory ensured they got back to winning ways and extended their goal difference to +29, three more than second placed City. It also gives the Gunners even more momentum heading into their League Cup semi-final second-leg clash against Chelsea.

Arsenal are competing on four fronts and are two matches away from securing Arteta’s first trophy as Arsenal manager since his 2020 FA Cup triumph. The Gunners have a 3-2 aggregate lead over Liam Rosenior’s side heading into the match at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

Arteta will be able to focus on the crucial contest knowing his side are in pole position for the Premier League and full of confidence. He was delighted with the ruthlessness of the Gunners’ finishing against Daniel Farke’s side, saying: “We’re very happy, obviously.

“A very impressive performance, a very impressive result. And in the context that we’ve done it.

“We knew about the difficulty of the game and the opponent that we’re facing, with a recent form and the style of play that they have at the moment, the energy that the stadium brings.

“And then the fact that after three results that didn’t go our way in the league, we really wanted to show how much we wanted it. And I think we said something on that today.”
