BREAKING: At Last, AGN Lifts Suspension On Actress Halima Abubakar

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has lifted the suspension of Nollywood actress, Halima Abubakar, bringing an end to a disciplinary action that lasted over a year.

The AGN had placed an indefinite suspension on Abubakar in October 2024 over allegations of defamation against fellow actors and prominent Nigerians. Following a two-year investigation, a disciplinary panel found her culpable and barred her from participating in any guild-related activities and film productions.

However, the guild announced on Thursday that the suspension had been lifted.

The outgoing National President of AGN, Emeka Rollas, made the announcement during the inauguration of the guild’s new National Executive Council (NEC) held at the AGN national secretariat in Abuja.

Rollas said, “Halima Abubakar took AGN to court claiming a frivolous amount of money, but we had our investigations, and we suspended her from all acting and all AGN activities.

“However, since acting remains her main source of livelihood, it would be wicked for us to leave her like that.

“Therefore today, by the powers imposed on me by the Board of Trustees and the entire Actors Guild of Nigeria, I hereby lift Halima Abubakar’s suspension.”

Rollas, whose second and final tenure ended in December 2025, formally handed over to Abubakar Yakubu, the new national president.

In addition to Abubakar, Rollas announced the lifting of suspensions for four other members of the Enugu State chapter of the guild: Christopher Igboji, Chidi Concord, Dan Ewerem, and Jeff Okwute.

“There were persons that we have suspended according to the AGN law, and because I’m leaving office, I don’t want to leave them suspended,” he stated.

Earlier, Chuks Chyke, Chairman of the Organising Committee of the inauguration, hailed Rollas for his “courage and inclusive leadership” that he said helped stabilise the guild during turbulent times.

“Your achievement will remain part of the legacy upon which we continue to build,” Chyke said, while congratulating the new president and his executive team.

He urged the new NEC to uphold transparency, unity, and professionalism.

He said, “Today marks a historical moment in the life of the Actors Guild of Nigeria as we witness the peaceful transition of leadership and the inauguration of a new president and National Executive Council.

“This occasion reflects the strength of our institution, the maturity of our processes, and the unity of our creative family.”

Chyke also called on AGN members across the country to support the new leadership and ensure the guild remains a strong, united and globally respected organisation.

“I sincerely commend the immediate past president and executives for their service, sacrifice and dedication; your tenure strengthened the foundation of the guild, expanded our professional relevance and upheld the dignity of the Nigerian actor,” he added.
