BREAKING: Rivers Assembly Members Loyal To FCT Minister Wike Withdraw Impeachment Notice Against Fubara [DETAIL]
Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have formally withdrawn the impeachment notice earlier issued against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The lawmakers, who are part of the faction aligned with Wike, announced the withdrawal on Monday during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, where they also issued an emotional appeal for peace, restraint and constitutional order. The impeachment notice, which had heightened political tension and raised fears of institutional breakdown in Rivers State, was described by the legislators as a last resort that they no longer wish to pursue in the interest of stability.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Enyinna Nwankwo, alongside Peter Abbey, said the decision followed intense consultations with elders, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other critical stakeholders across the state.
According to them, the intervention of respected leaders who pleaded for calm and reconciliation played a major role in persuading the lawmakers to step back from the brink of impeachment.
“We have listened to the voices of reason,” Nwankwo said. “Elders and leaders from different parts of Rivers State have reached out to us, appealing that we should give peace a chance. In the interest of unity, democracy and the future of our dear state, we have decided to withdraw the impeachment notice.”
The lawmakers stressed that their action should not be misconstrued as weakness or a surrender of the legislature’s constitutional powers. Rather, they framed it as a deliberate sacrifice aimed at preventing further political instability in a state already grappling with deep divisions at the highest levels of government.
They called on Governor Fubara to see the withdrawal as an opportunity for reconciliation and a turning point in his relationship with the House of Assembly.
