Victor Osimhen could not hide his emotions on Tuesday night after captaining Nigeria for the first time in a competitive match, describing the moment as a childhood dream fulfilled following the Super Eagles’ 3-1 victory over Uganda at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Osimhen wore the armband in the Group C clash after head coach Éric Chelle decided to rest regular captain Wilfred Ndidi. Osimhen, who was named vice-captain only days before the tournament kicked off, led from the front as Nigeria eased past the Cranes of Uganda.

It marked a significant personal milestone for the 27-year-old striker, who has grown into one of the most influential figures in the national team set-up.

“It’s a dream come true for me because I grew up watching the Super Eagles,” Osimhen said after the match, his pride evident as he reflected on the honour of leading the three-time African champions.

The Victor Osimhen-led side showed maturity and control, brushing aside Uganda’s resistance to maintain their strong start to the tournament. Osimhen’s leadership on the pitch drew praise from fans and teammates alike, with many hailing his calm authority and work rate.

Beyond the captaincy, attention has also turned to Osimhen’s growing goal tally for Nigeria. The striker, who currently plays for Galatasaray, now has 32 goals for the national team and is closing in on the long-standing record held by the late Rashidi Yekini, who scored 37.

Despite the numbers, Osimhen was quick to dismiss any talk of personal records, insisting his focus remains firmly on the team’s success at the Africa Cup of Nations.

“The captaincy today gave me a strong sense of belonging. I’m not thinking about equaling or surpassing Rashidi Yekini’s record for now; it’s all about the team,” he told reporters after the win over Uganda.

“I am trying to fight for my team to get goals, assists, but yes, hopefully not this AFCON and maybe not the qualifiers, but one day I know I am going to get there.”
