The group phase of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is drawing to a close, and the 16 teams that will contest the knockout rounds have now been confirmed, even with a handful of group matches still to be played.

The tournament began with 24 nations split into six groups of four. From there, the top two teams in each group, along with the four best third-placed sides, progressed to the round of 16, which gets underway on January 3.

As expected, some of Africa’s most established football nations have cruised through. Morocco, Egypt and Nigeria all finished top of their respective groups to book early passage into the knockout stage.

Beyond the familiar names, the group stage also delivered a landmark moment. Tanzania reached the AFCON knockout rounds for the first time in their history after grinding out a 1-1 draw against Tunisia, a result that proved enough for both sides to move on.

With qualification settled, attention now turns to the business end of the competition, where margins become finer and every mistake carries a heavy cost.

Group A: Morocco, Mali
Group B: Egypt, South Africa
Group C: Nigeria, Tunisia, Tanzania
Group D: Senegal, Congo, Benin
Group E: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Sudan
Group F: Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Mozambique
