BREAKING: Huge Setback As India Beats Nigeria To Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

India has been confirmed as the host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, winning the rights ahead of Nigeria’s Abuja after a closely contested bid process.

The Commonwealth Sport Executive Board announced on Wednesday that Ahmedabad, in the western state of Gujarat, has been chosen as the host city. The decision will be officially ratified at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly scheduled to take place in Glasgow on November 26.

The 2030 edition will mark a return of the Games to India for the first time since Delhi 2010, making it a symbolic homecoming as the Commonwealth celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Ahmedabad’s victory was anchored on its impressive modern infrastructure, including the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest sports arena in the world with a capacity of 132,000. The city, with over five million residents, has developed a reputation for hosting major international sporting events and has even been tipped as a potential Olympic host in the future.

Reacting to the announcement, the president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, Dr P. T. Usha, said the Games would serve as a unifying symbol for the country and a source of inspiration for young people.

“We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth,” she said.

Nigeria’s defeat means Africa’s long wait to host the Commonwealth Games continues, despite growing global calls for the continent to finally have its turn after 100 years of the competition’s history.

This marks the second time Abuja has lost out, following its unsuccessful bid to host the 2014 edition, which went to Glasgow.

The Genius Media Nigeria reports that Nigeria’s proposal had received strong political support from President Bola Tinubu, who publicly endorsed the project in July 2025. The Nigerian Olympic Committee had earlier submitted its expression of interest on March 28, describing Abuja’s bid as “a compelling narrative for the nation’s progress and readiness.”

In August, a high-powered Nigerian delegation of government and sports officials met with the Commonwealth Games Federation in London to present the country’s plan and capacity to host a sustainable Games. Both Abuja and Ahmedabad were the only cities to meet the submission deadline of August 31.

The president of Commonwealth Sport, Donald Rukare, praised both nations for their interest, describing their commitment as proof of the event’s continued global appeal.

“This positive response from two sporting powerhouse nations of the Commonwealth demonstrates the continued significance and legacy potential of the Commonwealth Games and the strength and appeal of our reimagined, sustainable Games model,” Rukare said.

India’s campaign gained momentum after Canada’s proposed multi-province bid fell apart earlier in the year. Hamilton, Ontario, which hosted the inaugural 1930 British Empire Games, had been considered the sentimental favourite for the centenary event before withdrawing due to financial challenges.

Commonwealth Sport stated that cities were evaluated on several factors, including infrastructure readiness, athlete experience, governance, and alignment with Commonwealth values.

While confirming Ahmedabad’s selection, the organisation also indicated that Nigeria’s dream of hosting remains alive.

“The Commonwealth Sport Executive Board has agreed to develop a strategy for supporting and accelerating Nigeria’s hosting ambitions for future Games, including consideration for 2034,” the body said.
