FIFA has announced a key adjustment to the African qualification format for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, sparking renewed hope for Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions.

The global football body made the change following the withdrawal of Eritrea from the qualifiers, a move that left one group with fewer teams and raised fairness concerns.

In a letter circulated to all 54 African football federations, FIFA clarified that results against the bottom-placed teams in each group will no longer count when determining the best four runners-up who will advance to the playoffs.

The revised rule has caused a major shake-up in the standings — to Cameroon’s advantage. The Lions, who previously struggled after managing just one win and one draw against their group’s bottom side, now climb into the top four among the second-placed nations.

Though the playoff route remains fiercely competitive, this latest development offers Coach Marc Brys and his squad a vital lifeline. With just one game left to play, Cameroon will be aiming to seize the momentum and fight their way to the 2026 World Cup — to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
