The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), including Nigeria, has also threatened to employ military force against the coup plotters. An analyst has suggested that the new military junta in Niger has sought help from the Russian mercenary group Wagner as the ECOWAS deadline for the release of the ousted president draws near.
