Guarantee Trust Bank (GTBank) launches the 737 app to enable its account holders access mobile banking services easily, and we can’t help but assess the bank’s fourth app.

The 737 App is fashioned after the bank’s mobile banking solution, *737#, which was designed to enable account holders to afford some basic banking services by dialling codes on their mobile phone. These services include account opening, transfers, airtime recharge and BVN code check.

It however appears that the app has been built to do more. In a text message to its subscribers, GTBank said: “download the new 737 App, register any Nigerian Bank card and you can buy airtime & transfer money, anytime, anywhere.” This indicates that the app has the capabilities to work with other banks ATM cards.

The Key Features of the app includes:
• Register and Link your preferred debit card* in a few seconds
• Transfer funds to any bank within Nigeria.
• Buy airtime for yourself and others directly from your phone contact list

The app was updated on the Google Play Store in August 2017. To use it, you must register your debit card on the platform, select a 737 PIN for everyday use and be sure that your phone number is linked to your account. The app only accepts Mastercard and VISA Cards.

Recall that the bank’s CEO, Segun Agbaje claimed that the bank acquired 3 million users who carried out N1 trillion in transactions within a year on the #737# platform in the past one year. One of the questions GTBank will ultimately need to answer is: of what benefit is the 737 app when the GTWorld app is available?

In addition, would customers who hitherto have been accustomed to carrying out transactions by merely dialling codes be comfortable with going the app route?

With the 737 app, GTBank now has a total of 4 mobile apps. The previous 3 are GTBank (for mobile banking), GTWorld (for lifestyle) and GTCube (For Mobile Point of Sale for merchants).

We only hope that GTBank intends to retain its focus: making “The simple life is just one touch away” a reality.
