Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed has accused the government led by Bola Tinubu of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and other state institutions to harass opposition politicians and push them to defect to the All Progressives Congress.

In a video that has circulated on social media, the governor, who is from the Peoples Democratic Party, said the moves amount to abuse of office.

He made the remarks amid ongoing talks about possible defections by some PDP figures and growing pressure on opposition leaders across states.

Mohammed, also known as Kaura, stated that he will not give in to any such pressure.

He told his audience that he refuses to join the APC and will not allow anyone to criminalise him simply because he belongs to a different party.

He pointed to the use of courts and agencies like the EFCC to target people who do not align with the ruling party.

According to him, the approach aims to weaken voices outside the APC and force changes in political loyalty.

The governor spoke at length about the situation facing opposition figures.

He noted that some leaders have faced investigations and actions that he described as targeted.

He added that his own administration has seen attempts to link officials to cases, including matters involving terrorism financing, which he dismissed as part of the same pattern.

Mohammed stressed that he has worked to keep his state stable and has no plans to shift his allegiance.

He said the focus should remain on governance and the needs of citizens rather than on tactics to pull people into one party.

His comments come at a time when the PDP has seen several members and even governors move to the APC in recent months.

Discussions about further realignments have continued, with some reports suggesting efforts to bring more opposition leaders on board ahead of future elections.

The African Democratic Congress shared the video on its mobilisation platform, framing it as evidence of resistance against what it called institutional pressure.

The post gained quick attention online, with users debating the claims and the broader state of opposition politics in the country.

No immediate response has come from the EFCC or the federal government to the specific accusations in the clip.

The commission has in the past defended its operations as independent and focused on cases of financial misconduct regardless of political affiliation.

Mohammed has held his position as governor of Bauchi since 2019 and currently chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum.

He has repeatedly said he remains committed to the PDP even as internal party issues persist.

The video shows him addressing a gathering, with applause from the audience at points where he rejected the idea of defection.

He spoke in a direct manner, laying out his stance without hesitation.

This development adds to the ongoing conversation about political movements in Nigeria and the role of federal institutions in the process.

Observers note that such claims often surface during periods of realignment, though outcomes vary from state to state.

The full clip runs for several minutes and captures the governor outlining his position on the matter
