Comedian Seyi Law has apologised publicly for remarks he made recently on The Honest Bunch podcast about insecurity in Nigeria.

In a post on Instagram on Thursday, Seyi Law said he had reflected on his comments and wanted to apologise to those who were hurt.

On the podcast, he had said: “Is it today that they’ve been kidnapping people from their home in Nigeria, and that Nigeria is safer now than 10 years ago,” a view that sparked debate online.

In his apology, he said: “I’m not someone to be insensitive. I apologise when I make a mistake. I’ve looked at that sentence, that statement and realised it is quite insensitive to people who had an issue or the other with kidnapping. And I want to sincerely tender an apology to people that statement have hurt.”

He added:

“My fellow Nigerians, I owe you this and more. You don’t deserve to have your sleep snatched away from you and the pain of one should be the pain of all.”

He continued: “I am sincerely and deeply sorry for such insensitive statement. I apologise to victims, families and everyone who has been affected in any way by the insecurity in the country.”

Seyi Law also called on President Bola Tinubu to intensify efforts in tackling insecurity. He ended his post: “God bless you and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. SEYILAW.”
