BREAKING: Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ Breaks 2026 Oscars Record With 16 Nominations [FULL LIST]
The organisers of the 98th Academy Awards on Thursday (today) announced the first slate of nominations for the 2026 Oscars, with Hollywood stars Lewis Pullman and Danielle Brooks unveiling nominees across all 24 award categories.
Early indicators suggest a fierce awards season ahead, as two films, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners and Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, emerged as the major frontrunners.
The Genius Media Nigeria reports that Coogler’s Sinners shattered long-standing Academy Awards records after clinching a staggering 16 nominations, the highest ever for a single film in Oscar history.
The achievement sees Sinners surpass the previous joint record of 14 nominations, which had been shared for decades by cinematic classics All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another also enjoyed a strong showing, securing 13 nominations and firmly positioning itself as a serious contender in multiple top categories, including Best Picture and acting honours.
The Best Picture category features a diverse mix of historical dramas, biopics and genre-defying films, reflecting the Academy’s broadening taste in recent years. The Best Actor race is equally competitive, pitting established Hollywood heavyweights against critically acclaimed performances.
The 98th Oscars ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood, with comedian and television host Conan O’Brien returning as host.
With record-breaking nominations, heavyweight contenders and a tightly packed Best Actor race, the 2026 Academy Awards are shaping up to be one of the most competitive ceremonies in Oscar history.
