Real Madrid made a shock announcement earlier today, confirming that Xabi Alonso would step down as manager, a day after their 3-2 defeat to FC Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.

Xabi Alonso made the decision to step away from Real Madrid himself. The coach was said to be exhausted by egos and a growing lack of respect inside the dressing room, which intensified this week, and also felt a lack of backing from the club in recent months

Alonso’s position had been under threat for quite some time now, but the five-game winning streak before the Super Cup finale, including a victory over Atletico Madrid, seemed to have earned him temporary reprieve.

But Real Madrid and Alonso himself felt that the time was right to part ways. Alvaro Arbeloa, who had been handed the reins of the Castilla team in 2025, has been promoted to the first-team head coach role.

Journalist Jose Luis Sanchez of El Chiringuito TV has come forward with an exclusive report outlining the three main reasons why Real Madrid decided to move on from the former midfielder.

Physical preparation

One of the major issues that Real Madrid have faced this season is injuries and poor physical preparation.

The squad has been ravaged with injuries throughout the campaign while the team has come up short to some of the teams they have faced when it comes to the physical aspect on the field.

So much so that, there had even been serious talk of Antonio Pintus being reintegrated into the first-team backroom staff in the weeks leading up to Alonso’s sacking. With Arbeloa now in charge, Florentino Perez could go ahead and put Pintus back in charge as the fitness coach.

Poor rapport with players

An issue that has been brewing for quite some time now, Alonso did not see eye to eye with some of the heavy hitters in the Real Madrid locker room.

The manager has had a tense relationship with Vinicius Jr. for quite a while now, whereas there were also some issues with Federico Valverde, who was not always happy with his role in the team.

Some of the members were understood to be unhappy with some of the methods the 44-year-old had introduced, and the unrest that was building played a part in the club’s decision.

Poor image after Clasico defeat in Super Cup

Finally, the third main reason, as per the report, was the team’s poor performance in the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona on Sunday night.

Having already beaten the Blaugrana once earlier in the season, Real Madrid failed to achieve a repeat in Saudi Arabia. While the final scoreline read 3-2, the performance seemingly left a bad taste for the club management, leading to Alonso’s removal.
