Incumbent national secretary of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Alhaji Abubakar Yakubu, has been elected as president of the body.

‎

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has concluded its highly anticipated national elections in Benin City, Edo State, with Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu emerging as the new President-Elect of the Guild, defeating Chief Dame Rita Daniels, the mother of popular actress Regina Daniels, in a keenly contested race.

The election, held on Saturday, December 6, drew accredited delegates from 29 state chapters of the Guild and was conducted in line with the AGN constitution and established electoral guidelines. Observers described the process as vibrant, competitive and largely peaceful, reflecting the growing importance of internal democracy within Nigeria’s creative and entertainment industry.

At the close of voting and collation of results, Yakubu, who previously served as the National Secretary of the Guild, secured a narrow but decisive victory. His emergence was widely seen as a vote of confidence in his administrative experience, deep institutional knowledge and longstanding service to AGN.

Ambassador Ifeoma Okeke also emerged victorious as the National Secretary of the Guild, completing the formation of a new national leadership team.

Inside sources within the election committee disclosed that Dame Rita Daniels mounted a robust campaign, reportedly spending millions of naira on logistics, including the accommodation, feeding and transportation of delegates. Despite the reportedly extensive mobilization by her camp, delegates ultimately cast their votes based on personal conviction and their assessment of leadership competence for the next phase of the Guild’s development.

In his acceptance remarks, Alhaji Yakubu expressed profound gratitude to AGN members nationwide for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to pursue inclusive leadership, institutional reforms and improved welfare for members.

The conclusion of the Benin election marks a new chapter for AGN as it prepares to address pressing industry challenges, including welfare reforms, talent development, global competitiveness and stronger engagement with government and private sector partners.

The new AGN President is taking over from Dr. Emeka Rollas (MON).
