Luis Díaz will be missing from Bayern Munich’s Champions League squad for a while after UEFA confirmed a three-match suspension for the Colombian forward.

The punishment follows Luis Díaz’s sending off in the 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.

UEFA explained that the decision was based on what it described as “serious rough play” during the stoppage-time challenge that brought down Achraf Hakimi near the end of the first half. Hakimi has been sidelined since then with a badly sprained left ankle.

The night had actually begun well for Díaz, who struck twice to give Bayern control at the Parc des Princes before the game shifted with the red card. The wait to know how long he would sit out has now ended, and Bayern will have to cope without him against Arsenal on Wednesday, Sporting CP on 9 December and Union Saint-Gilloise on 21 January.

Bayern are currently leading their Champions League group with four wins from four, but the news still came as a twist, especially after earlier comments from Vincent Kompany. Speaking on Friday, the Bayern manager had said he believed the suspension would be much shorter.

“My information is that he’s suspended for one game,” Kompany said. “I’d be really disappointed if it turned out my information wasn’t correct,” he added, smiling, with sporting director Christoph Freund saying he had received the same information.

Kompany also tried to steer attention back to domestic football, pointing out that Bayern still have a job to do before heading to London.

“There’s no question of any load management for [Díaz]. He has to help us with his energy. The game against Arsenal doesn’t have much influence. The lads will go into the Freiburg game full of energy. We want to win that game and aren’t worrying about Arsenal yet,” he said.
