FRESH: UBA Breaks Silence To Fire Incident At Afriland Tower In Lagos Island

United Bank for Africa (UBA) has clarified the fire outbreak that engulfed a section of Afriland Tower, a six-storey building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, which also houses one of its branches.

The fire incident, which occurred on Tuesday, caused panic in the area as many occupants were trapped in the building.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the blaze started in the inverter room located in the basement of the building, and thick smoke spread across multiple floors.

“Evacuation of occupants is in progress, while firefighting operations have been concluded, dousing the earlier panic before the arrival of the first responders,” Ogabi Olajide, Deputy Controller General of the agency, said in a statement.

The bank, in a statement on Tuesday, said contrary to reports circulating on social media, its head office, UBA House on Marina, was not affected by the incident.

“We are aware of the fire incident at a building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, which incidentally houses one of our many branches in Lagos Island,” the statement read.

“As against reports on online and social media, the affected building is not UBA House, Marina, the Bank’s head office.”

UBA further assured that the safety and well-being of its staff, customers, and other visitors have been secured.
