BREAKING: Like Nigeria, Ghana Government Slaps DStv With GH¢10000 Daily Fine

The Genius Media Nigeria reports that The Government of Ghana has imposed a statutory fine of GH¢10,000 per day on MultiChoice Ghana (DStv) for failing to submit critical pricing data requested under the Electronic Communications Act (ECA).

The sanction, which took effect on Friday, August 15, 2025, was announced by Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Sam George, during a meeting with DStv executives.

He explained that the requested data including a detailed breakdown of bouquet prices, tax components, and comparisons with at least six other African markets was essential to ongoing discussions aimed at lowering subscription fees for Ghanaian customers.

MultiChoice Ghana had been granted an extension until Monday, August 11, 2025, to provide the information but failed to comply.

The Ministry has further warned that if no price reduction agreement is reached by September 6, 2025, DStv’s operating licence in Ghana could be suspended.

Sam George stressed that the daily fine is a statutory requirement under Ghana’s Electronic Communications Act and distinct from ongoing negotiations.

“The law is clear, and we will enforce it. If necessary, we can freeze accounts to protect consumer interests,” he said, adding that once the data is received, it will undergo an objective review.

The Minister assured the public that if the review shows taxes are the main cause of high subscription fees in Ghana, he will push for tax relief.

“If not, we expect DStv to comply with our directive to make subscriptions more affordable for Ghanaians,” he added.
