Double Standards? KWAM 1 Gets Off With An Apology While Comfort Emmanson Goes To Prison

A heated debate over fairness and equal treatment under Nigerian law has erupted after two high-profile incidents involving alleged unruly behaviour on domestic flights ended in sharply contrasting outcomes.

The Genius Media Nigeria reports that The first case centres on Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1 or K1 De Ultimate, who was accused by aviation authorities of obstructing a ValueJet aircraft from taxiing at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Tuesday.

According to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the 68-year-old brought a flask containing an alcoholic beverage on board flight VK201 to Lagos. He allegedly refused to hand it over when challenged by a flight attendant and engaged in a confrontation that delayed departure.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said video evidence showed the singer blocking the aircraft’s movement, warning that such conduct could endanger lives.

The NCAA placed him on a temporary no-fly list and petitioned the Attorney-General, Lateef Fagbemi, and Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for criminal investigation, but both of them are yet to announce any actions against the Fuji singer.

KWAM 1 later denied the flask contained alcohol, saying it held water due to a medical condition, and expressed regret over the “unfortunate” incident.

While investigations continue, there has been no report of arrest, arraignment, or a lifetime ban from airlines.

The Comfort Emmanson Case

In contrast, passenger Comfort Emmanson is facing far harsher consequences over a separate incident aboard Ibom Air flight Q9 303 from Uyo to Lagos on Sunday.

Ibom Air and the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) allege she refused to switch off her mobile phone despite repeated crew instructions, assaulted flight attendants, and attempted to use a fire extinguisher as a weapon. Upon arrival in Lagos, she reportedly confronted and physically attacked the purser.

She was immediately banned for life from flying with all AON member airlines, charged to court, and remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre. Videos circulating online show her being restrained, with reports from witnesses and commentators alleging she was stripped in the process.

Public Outcry Over Alleged Double Standards

The differing outcomes have triggered public criticism, with many Nigerians questioning why KWAM 1, accused of directly blocking an aircraft’s movement, has not faced comparable punishment.

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, called the disparity “a textbook case of double standards” in a statement on Monday.

He apologised to the Ibom Air crew assaulted by Emmanson but condemned her reported public stripping as “dehumanising” and “the height of rascality” by security operatives.

Obi contrasted her swift arrest, trial, and remand with the absence of similar action against KWAM 1, despite official accounts suggesting his actions endangered more than 70 passengers.

“It is unacceptable that she was hurriedly taken to court and remanded, while someone who visibly held a plane from taking off and put hundreds of lives at risk is still at large,” Obi said, adding that justice in Nigeria “must never be about who is poor or powerless versus who has influence or access to government officials.”

AON, however, has maintained its zero-tolerance stance on unruly passengers, citing recent incidents as justification for lifetime bans. The NCAA has said enforcement action will become more frequent as cases of in-flight misconduct increase.

Broader Implications

The twin incidents have opened a wider conversation about Nigeria’s so-called “Do you know who I am?” culture, where influential individuals are perceived to evade accountability, while ordinary citizens face the full weight of the law.

For many, the question now is whether the rule of law will be applied evenly or whether class, status, and connections will continue to determine outcomes in the country’s justice system.
