BREAKING: Tinubu Led Govt Completes Extradition Process For Simon Ekpa To Return To The Country—–As of January 3, 2025, the Nigerian government has completed the extradition process for Simon Ekpa, a Finnish citizen of Nigerian origin and a prominent separatist leader advocating for the independence of Biafra from Nigeria.

The Defence Headquarters confirmed that all necessary documents have been submitted to Finland to facilitate his return to Nigeria.

Simon Ekpa has been a central figure in the Biafra separatist movement, leading the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) and the Biafra Liberation Army (BLA). His activities have included organizing referendums and declaring the restoration of Biafra’s independence.

In November 2024, Finnish authorities arrested Ekpa on suspicion of terrorist activities and incitement of violence in Nigeria. He has remained in custody since then, awaiting trial. Finnish prosecutors have until May 2025 to formalize charges against him.

The extradition process has faced legal challenges, primarily because Finland, like other European Union countries, typically does not extradite its citizens outside the region. However, given the international nature of terrorism charges, there is a possibility for extradition if Nigeria can meet specific legal requirements.

The completion of the extradition process marks a significant development in Nigeria’s efforts to bring Simon Ekpa to face charges related to his separatist activities. The final decision now rests with Finnish authorities, who will determine whether to proceed with the extradition based on the legal frameworks and evidence presented.
