Lions Club Donates Solar Lab And Toilet To Lagos School—-The Lions Club has donated a solar-powered computer laboratory, solar lamps and toilets to the Oregun Senior Secondary school, Lagos, as its green legacy project.

Newsmen reports that the club on Saturday donated 13 Laptops, a renovated computer laboratory and solar energy to the school on Saturday.

The club also refurbished the female staff toilet of the school as well as a signage for the Olu of Oregun’s palace, all worth N4 million.

The Region 4 Chairperson of the 402B3 District of the club, Mrs Anita “Nana-Okuribido, said the project was part of the group’s effort at promoting sustainability and education in the community.

“This is the first time we commissioned a green legacy project, a solar computer laboratory for students at the Oregun Senior High School.

“We are concerned about environmental sustainability; the legacy project is to make the students know that they have to be energy efficient, energy sufficient and energy independent.

“It is our way of mitigating the climate change effects,” she said

According to her, the club will soon flag off the ‘One Oregun community child, One solar reading lamp’ campaign. “We will get sponsors for the lamps, each of which costs N5,000.

“Kerosene lamps emit carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and sulphur, which is very injurious to their health. So we want to make children in the Oregun Community very healthy.”

The District Governor of Lions Club International, Mr Kayode Oshinuga, commended the club, reiterating the need to promote more environmentally sustainable projects.

“There are five areas that the Lions Club focuses on, and protecting our environment is one of them.

“We have put little emphasis on the environment so far. A good health in fact stems from the environment we live in,” he said.

He explained that the club always prioritised the environment, and that was why it’s team inaugurated the solar powered computer laboratory at the Oregon Senior Secondary school.

“Promoting environmental sustainability, the culture of a clean environment and environmental protection goes a long way to influence the way we live.

“We have been charged to educate members of the public on environmental sustainability, we will embark on massive advocacy in June during the World Environmental Day on how we can protect the environment,” Oshinuga said.

Principal, Oregun Senior High school, Mrs Mobolanle Ojowolo, commended the club for the donations and called for more interventions in government schools.

“Since the COVID-19 pandemic we have had to do a lot of online teaching. The computer laboratory that has been rehabilitated into solar laboratory by the Lions Club will enhance our online teaching.

“The solar computer laboratory will provide a broader space for the students to explore and research on all subjects they are being taught.

“The children will now have access to more computers, the Internet and an enabling environment to learn.

“We are grateful to the Lions Club for the intervention in the school and we hope for more,” the principal said.

The Oba of Oregun, Dr Olusesan Akingbola, also commended the club and enjoined the students to make appropriate use of the computers.

“We are grateful to the Lions Club and I thank you for doing these projects in our school. Do not stop here, you can do more,” Akingbola said.
