KEDCO’S spokesman, Mohammed Kandi, said the company’s technical officials had been mobilised to the scene to arrest the situation as well as ascertain the immediate cause of the tragedy.

Tragedy struck on Monday night at 44, Freetown Road, Sabon Gari, Kano, following the electrocution of a 10-year-old boy, identified as Ifeanyi Obodo.

According to an eyewitness, the incident occurred moments after some officials from Kano Electricity Distribution Company allegedly disconnected power from a  house and left the cables on the rooftop.

The mother of the victim, simply identified as Mama Ifeanyi, said while frying yam for sale at the street corner close to their home, she sent her son on an errand to their room where he  was electrocuted.

Narrating the sad incident, the bereaved mother said the deceased was fetching a plate from the room when the tragedy occurred.

She said, “I asked him to go to the room to fetch a plate with which to serve him some fried yam; I waited a while for him to return but he never did. Moments later, my first daughter rushed out, complaining that she did not know what Ifeanyi was doing with his head plunged into a water container in the room.

“Following my daughter’s alarm, I dashed to the room to ascertain what was happening, touched him, but was shocked by electric currents and fell down. I promptly raised the alarm which attracted my neighbour, who also touched him but was also shocked.

“He, therefore, used a long stick to push Ifeanyi away from the pool of water, only to discover that his skin was already peeling off.’’

Mama Ifeanyi said neighbours assisted her in rushing her son to a nearby Greenline Hospital where he was certified dead on arrival.

A resident stated that the disconnected naked wire was having contact with the roof, adding that when  power was restored, the tenants fled the house after they felt electric shocks.

KEDCO’S spokesman, Mohammed Kandi, said the company’s technical officials had been mobilised to the scene to arrest the situation as well as ascertain the immediate cause of the tragedy.
